Re: shftts

This does not appear to be a name. Also, there are no letters in Chinese, so acronyms like this are impossible to write in Chinese.

I'm a little slow, as I am the only one to answers Chinese-related questions on this forum. I was deploy with the U.S. Army late last year, so I barely get a chance to check the forum. Sometimes I don't get caught up until the weekends. I went from citizen-soldier to full time, and still adjusting. ...

Brave Ninja or Courageous Ninja in Mandarin Chinese would be 勇忍者. It's more natural to write "courageous" than "does not have fear", in most Asian languages. If you want to avoid paying for a translation fee, and you want it in Japanese, just order this title from one of my Japanese calligraphers, a...

Sorry for the very late reply, the translator lost the email I send back in December. We can translate this for about $10 (giving it to you for about half price as we didn't follow up for so long). You can pay for that service here: http://www.orientaloutpost.com/proddetail.php?prod=x-eval Copy this...

Re: Found a saucer with this mark

These take quite a bit of expertise and/or time to decipher. I have somebody who can do it, but I would have to pay them about $20 to do it. Probably not worth it for you. Sorry that there is no easy answer. Seal script dates back to before 221 B.C. and much like Egyptian hieroglyphics is hard to de...

These would be $32.88 each plus shipping ($9.80 for return shipping from Beijing for any number of wall scrolls). You'll just need to mail them to Beijing yourself (at your expense). Let me know if you want to pursue this, and I will set it up for you.

Re: Tattoo Idea: Translated Phrase from Japanese

The base of your phrase can be translated as: Let nature take its course. What will be will be. Yours has "か" at the end, which is sort of a Japanese question mark. So it's like, "What will be will be?" Also, this is written completely in Hiragana. There's several ways to write this phrase with Kanj...

We can do this. The price is $32.88 if you want basic silk wall scrolls. Return postage from Beijing is $9.80 for the whole order. But, you will need to mail the raw artwork to Beijing yourself (your cost for postage). Let me know if you want to pursue this. Note, I will need to split this topic off...

Re: Two New Mounts

Sorry this took a while. I had to consult with my workshop manager (master mounter). We're both worried whether this is on one piece of silk, or has been partially mounted to paper. Hard to tell from the picture. Mounting silk is tricky anyway. Over time, it's virtually guaranteed to have some wavin...

Re: Translate this chop mark?

This one is just too hard. A translator spent an hour looking through a zhuan (seal) dictionary, but nothing matched up. There are so many character variations, rare names, rare characters, and the difficulty of identifying seal script in the first place. In 221 B.C. when a standard set of character...

Re: scroll width

Yes, we can do that. For a margin of safety, be sure not to make it wider than 10.5" (it will be trimmed down to about 10" wide anyway). So that will give you about 17.5" at the ends of the knobs.

The knobs and silk borders come to 19cm or about 7.5"
So, to keep it in inches, 18 - 7.5 = a paper width of 10.5"

Re: Framing painting from my trip to China

Personally, I think of framing a square painting in a standard-western-style rectangular frame as a compromise. They don't do this in China, as they almost always custom-frame the artwork, and square or 2:1 ratio paintings are the standard (for the rarely-found Chinese standard frames on the market)...

I suggest you trim them to where you want them plus about 5mm (we need to do a final trim when we mount, which is usually 5mm or so). This will save me translating complex instructions into Chinese for the guys at the workshop. I'll just add the $10 per scroll to a separate credit card transaction. ...
